Understanding Kiln Drying Process

Our firewood is kiln dried to a precise moisture level to guarantee an easy, efficient burn. The drying process uses controlled heat from our biomass boilers, which are powered using waste timber created during processing. This closed-loop system minimises environmental impact and ensures that nothing goes to waste. Before logs leave the drying chambers, they are thoroughly checked for moisture content, with each log losing up to a pint of water during the process. Once they meet our ‘gold standard’, the logs move on to grading.

Moisture Content Comparison

When comparing kiln dried logs to seasoned logs, the distinct advantage lies in moisture content. Kiln dried logs average a significantly lower moisture content, often below 20%, ensuring they burn hotter and cleaner. This translates to a more efficient fuel source, reducing smoke and increasing the heat output of your wood burners and stoves. Customers choosing our kiln dried hardwood logs experience consistent quality and performance, making them an ideal choice for enhancing warmth and ambiance at home.

What Does “Ready to Burn” Mean?

The Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) appointed HETAS and Woodsure to run the Ready to Burn fuel certification scheme. The scheme makes it easy for people to find the cleanest fuels for burning at home. Using fuels that are approved and labelled as Ready to Burn also means it’s easy to comply with Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 that outlaw the sale of wet wood and housecoal, which are the most polluting fuels. The Ready to Burn mark helps consumers to easily identify solid fuels that are legal to burn at home in compliance with the new Air Quality Regulations. Applying the Ready to Burn mark to solid fuels is a big step forward in helping people to make safer and cleaner choices when it comes to domestic burning.

Importance of Certification

The Ready to Burn certification is crucial for ensuring that the firewood you purchase is both safe and environmentally friendly. By choosing certified kiln dried logs, you are not only complying with legal standards but also contributing to improved air quality. This certification ensures the logs meet stringent criteria for low moisture content, helping reduce emissions and promoting a cleaner burn. As a trusted supplier in Lichfield, we prioritise providing certified, high-quality firewood that supports sustainable practices and enhances your wood-burning experience.
